RE: Feedback

There are 205 open teaching positions in Miami-Dade County Public Schools right now. I did my observation in Tucker Elementary my freshman year and I was fortunate enough to have a teacher who was very open and spoke to me about what her life was like as a teacher. Because of the amount she was paid, she lives in homestead and has to drive an hour to get to school everyday because she cannot afford to live closer. Infact, she told me that she only makes enough to cover her rent. Her husbands income paid for everything else. However, if she didn't have the support of her husband she would not be able to afford to live within an hour radius of the school that she teaches. She told me she used to work multiple jobs but because of her age and her commute to school that is no longer possible. I also observed at a private kindergarten and another teacher told me that in order to make enough money to live a comfortbale life in Miami he worked four jobs: teacher, karate instructor, tutor, and nanny on the weekend. This is the life of most teachers in Miami.

You asked us to come up with a solution to this problem but unfortunatley, I think this is one of those things that doesn't have a clear cut solution. No one wants to pay more taxes and the government is not willing to reallocate money.Because of that, this is a problem teachers will continue to fight and teachers will continue to leave their jobs.
